Linder, Max
(1883-1925) (Gabriel Maximilien Leuvielle)
   actor, film producer
Max Linder (the stage name of Gabriel Maximilien Leuvielle) was born in Saint-Loubès, Gironde. His style, finesse, mischievousness, and playfulness made him a precursor of the British actor and film star Charles Chaplin, who himself recognized Lin-der as his master. Creator of a type of elegant, yet comic and impertinent persona, he made his character popular through some 300 films made between 1905 and 1925 (Max et le quinquina, Max toréador) in France, and in the united States (Sept Ans de malheur, 1921; Soyez ma femme, 1921; L'Étroit Mousquetaire, 1922).
